In recent times, technology has fundamentally transformed how wars are fought: the war in Ukraine and other conflicts around the world have shown the effectiveness and efficiency of hybrid conflicts. Coupled with increasing investments in cyber military capabilities around the globe, it is expected that most future conflict will have a cyber component. This means that international protections need to reflect the new reality of warfare in the 21st century.
With these considerations in mind, today, on International Human Rights Day, the Cybersecurity Tech Accord has endorsed the Red Cross Digital Emblem pledge. Through this endorsement, the Tech Accord aims to provide key industry support for a critical initiative: the creation, by the Red Cross, of a distinctive digital emblem to serve as a cyberspace analog to the traditional red cross, red crescent and red crystal emblems.
In order for the digital emblem to be effective, it must be granted the same legal protections as the traditional symbol under international humanitarian law, ensuring it remains a marker of safety and aid in times of need. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is requesting support from industry partners to help operationalize the digital emblem project.
The Cybersecurity Tech Accord reaffirms our commitment to foster a cyberspace that is inherently secure, stable and upholds the sanctity of rights, both in times of peace and conflict, and stand ready to champion several principles to make sure this vision becomes a tangible reality, including respecting international humanitarian law in cyberspace, championing the digital emblem and partnering across stakeholder groups to ensure success.
